Hinter-den-Kulissen-Führung: Wie funktioniert Juist?

20.01.2025 - 09.05.2025

Juister Week: What you always wanted to know!

Drum roll and watch out - we've got something very special up our sleeve for you! Now that the island is not yet so full, we've come up with something: we want to take you behind the scenes of the island. As you know, we want to show you places and introduce you to people you didn't know before. Because you've probably wondered at one time or another how everyday life on the island works, right? What we do with our waste water, where our water comes from, where the children go to school and kindergarten, what the everyday life of someone in the catering or retail trade looks like ...
And it is precisely for inquisitive people like you that we have come up with the behind-the-scenes tour "How does Juist work?". Here you'll get to know the people who keep the island running, you'll feel the soul of Töwerland.
Think of it as a course - a course for Töwerland. Except that you don't have to write an exam at the end.
Thomas Vodde, our events and marketing manager, takes you to all these places you didn't know about before. So, what are you waiting for? Discover the island behind the scenes!
Book quickly - we can only offer a few places and they are in high demand!

This is how you can imagine our behind-the-scenes tour "How does Juist work?":

There are two dates in 2025 to choose from, each from Monday to Friday (1st date: 20.01. - 24.01.2025 / 2nd date: 05.05. - 09.05.2025). You will have the same opportunities and meet the same people on both dates. But: This is a dialog. Your questions and concerns will of course influence the program!
  • Monday
    • 11:00 am: Opening in the small hall in the Haus des Kurgastes
    • 13:30 pm: Discussion with volunteers in the small hall in the Haus des Kurgastes: Why is volunteering so important on Juist, is it true that many people here do several volunteer jobs at once and why is the search for volunteers even more important on the island than on the mainland: we will answer these and many other questions.
    • 15:00: Visit to the sewage treatment plant: How is the wastewater treated, what happens to the wastewater, why is the sewage treatment plant quite sustainable, what's the deal with the sewage pig: these are just a few of the questions we will answer.
  • Tuesday
    • 15:00: Visit to the school: What is life like as an island teacher, what are the challenges here, how many children go to school here: our experts are looking forward to your questions!
    • 16:00: Visit to the kindergarten: How many children go to the kindergarten, is the day different for the children on Juist than on the mainland, what was the kindergarten shuttle all about: The employees of the kindergarten on Juist know the answers!
    • 19:00: Crime story reading in the small hall in the Haus des Kurgastes with Thomas Vodde
  • Wednesday
    • 11:00: Visit to a horse stable (either at Schwips in the Loog or at HUF in the Ostdorf): How does transportation with horses work on the island, what do the animals do in winter, can I just stroke a carriage horse like this: we'll find answers to these questions. And much more, of course!
    • 15:00: Discussion with representatives of the retail and gastronomy sectors in the small hall in the Haus des Kurgastes: How does the food get from the mainland to the island, where do the staff come from, do you still enjoy the sunset on the beach: Our gastronomy and shopping experts are ready to answer your questions!
  • Thursday
    • 11:00 am: Discussion with the National Park Ranger Markus Großewinkelmann and representatives of the National Park House: How does the ebb and flow work, is the Wadden Sea really as adaptable as you hear, what curious stories have you already experienced: The conservationists are looking forward to providing you with answers!
    • 15:00: East Frisian tea ceremony with "real" Juist women in the island museum in the Loog: What's the story behind the Elführtje, why can't I get such beautiful little clouds in my tea at home? These are just two of the interesting questions we will get to the bottom of.
  • Friday
    • 11:00 am: Visit to the waterworks: Where does the drinking water on Juist come from, what's the deal with the pair of oystercatchers at the works, why were the many rainfalls last winter so problematic: we'll find out all this and much more.
    • 15:30: Closing event: "What you always wanted to know ...": If you still have questions (or other concerns), your contacts at the tourist office are ready and waiting to hear about your topics!
During all these stops, you will of course have the opportunity to ask the experts questions at your leisure and get rid of any questions you may have. During the on-site appointments, there is of course also a short guided tour of the areas - at least the areas that we are allowed to show according to the regulations (keyword: hygiene regulations). Nevertheless, what we can promise you - hand on heart - is that you will get to know the island from a side that will be unknown to you (and even to many people who have lived here for a long time).

Further information about our guided tour "How does Juist work?":

This is the first time we are organizing such a week where we will show you our island. This is an event that lasts the whole week. Unfortunately, it is not possible to take part in only selected stations.
You should be aware that some stations (e.g. the sewage treatment plant and the island museum) are quite far away from the town center. So think about whether you can / want to walk this route or whether it would make sense to organize a bike.
Costs:
€199 per person
Minimum number of participants: 3
Maximum number of participants: 15 people
Excluding arrival and departure, accommodation, meals and guest contribution
