At the Juist airfield you can wonderfully watch the air traffic.

The Juist airfield, the second "traffic mainstay" of the heavily tidal island, is located at its eastern end, about 4 km from the village centre. The airfield road also ends here. In a cosy café/restaurant you can wait, chat or watch the air traffic.
Here are a few historical facts about Juist airfield:

  • From 1971 to 1973, the airfield's grass runway was paved into a fixed runway 700 metres long and 15 metres wide.
  • In 1990, the runway was widened to 20 metres.
  • The tower and the airfield restaurant were built from 1974 to 1977.
Passenger and goods transports take place daily, and during the summer months, the motor gliders of the youth training centre take off regularly. Flights take place throughout the year, but only when visual flight conditions are good enough. Patient transports are possible at any time, i.e. also at night with a helicopter. The airfield is particularly important for the island in severe weather conditions, such as icy conditions or strong easterly winds, as it is the only connection to the mainland in these weather conditions.

You can also take off from Juist airfield for sightseeing flights and flights over the mudflats and the East Frisian Islands.
Directly at the airfield is the youth education centre "Theodor Wuppermann e.V.". Experiential education courses are held here all year round. Directions

Der Flugplatz liegt ca. 4,5 km vom Ort entfernt am Ostende der Insel. Sie erreichen den Flugplatz über die Flugplatzstraße mit dem Fahrrad, der Kutsche (Kutschverkehr zum Flugplatz) oder zu Fuß. Sie können den Flugplatz auch zu Fuß über den Strand erreichen.

Accessibility

The airfield is located approx. 4.5 km from the village at the eastern end of the island. You can reach the airfield via the airfield road by bicycle, carriage (carriage transport to the airfield) or on foot. However, this is very difficult for wheelchair users. The road to the airfield is paved and relatively flat.
